U15G Regional Twenty20 Competition 2013
ECB Girls County U15 Twenty20 WINNERS at the South West Regional Festival

The South West regional T20 competition took place at the Taunton Vale Sports Club last week on 28th and 29th May. Despite the awful weather on the first day where all the girls from Devon, Gloucestershire, Wales and Somerset played through cold and the rain. Due to the delayed start because of the weather the T20 was reduced to 15 overs. Devon's first match was against Wales and following a dubious run out decision of captain Emma Jackman the girls batted on to a respectable total of 95-3, with Milly Squire 53no and Jessie Jones (17) contributing very well with the bat. S Jenkins being the only Wales wicket taker (2-22).

Wales chased hard but fell a little short for their 15 overs and finished their innings on 85-4. After a quick lunch the girls began their second game in slowly deteriorating conditions against Gloucestershire. The fall of Devon's captain and opening bat yet again brought Jessie Jones to the crease; but her time was short lived with some strong bowling from the Gloucestershire girls and was bowled out for 0. With Devon 6-2 off the first two overs things looks decided less than hopeful at the stage. However with some steady batting from Olivia Jones (19no) and opener Milly Squire (40), Devon completed their overs on 93-6. With the rain continuing to fall steadily; it was at the end of Gloucestershire's third over that the game was abandoned due to the condition of the pitch!

The second day of the festival brought not only the sun, warmer conditions and some very exciting and nail-biting cricket! Devon faced Somerset, knowing they had to win in order to get into the afternoon's final.

Having lost the toss once again, Devon were put into bat and Somerset's opening bowlers saw off our opening pair. Everyone contributed with the bat and Devon finished on 71-6 for their 15 over innings. Somerset batted very well and it soon became apparent that Devon had to bowl Somerset out in order to secure the win and a place in the final. With some amazing bowling Eva Lloyd 3-11 and Emma Jackman 3-6 and two fantastic run outs from Olivia Jones, The Devon girls did indeed bowl Somerset out! And into the final they went! Whilst the girls took lunch, the other semi-final was taking place - Wales v Gloucestershire and a place in the final went to Gloucestershire. So the abandoned game from the previous day was to take place and be completed after all!

Scorecard v Somerset

Emma Jackman won the toss for Devon and decided to bat. A good bowling attack from the Gloucestershire girls, notably Charlie Phillips (2-9), left the middle and lower order batters to make the runs. Charlie Green (17no) steadied the team and led them to a respectable 98 off a rather worrying start, off their 20 overs. Devon took to the field with Gloucestershire looking for just 99 to secure the win and a place in the National finals in August. Devon could not have looked for a better start with a wicket for Milly Squire off the first ball! After the second wicket fell for Gloucestershire, Zoe Cullum (47 run out) and Jess Werrett (23) were a difficult partnership to break and they batted sensibly and picked up quick runs and put Gloucestershire in a strong position; and despite positive bowling from Emma Jackman, Milly Lee and Charlie green it proved difficult to dislodge either of the Gloucestershire batters. The Devon girls were sharp in the field, notably Charlie Green, Olivia Jones and Jessie Jones. So, with only 4 overs left Milly Squire (1-12) return to bowl her last two overs, but could not secure a wicket but only gave away 8 runs. It was with the next over where a great run out of Zoe Cullum left the game with a tantalising score of 83-3, requiring 16 to win off the last two overs. With a nail-biting last over, Jessie Jones (3-10) took a catch off her first ball and another wicket off the last ball. Gloucestershire fell short by 5 runs to give a spectacular victory to the Devon girls - well done everyone!!
